The Hughes' did what most funeral homes did during the 1940's and 1950's- they operated an ambulance service. Up until the late 1960's, when the city begin offering their own emergency ambulance service, Dudley M. Hughes held the city ambulance contracts. He also operated a private service to nursing homes, hospitals and families needing non-emergency services. 

 

The Dudley M. Hughes ambulance service was based at the family home on Jefferson Blvd. 

 

Ronald W. Hughes' children still remember making ambulance runs with their parents and his grandchildren remember the stories they shared.
