Dr. Joseph Phillip Pazhukkayil, beloved uncle, passed away in Dallas, Texas on Monday, December 4, 2017 at the age of 90. He was preceded in death by his parents, Joseph and Mariamma (Cheryathil) Pazhukkayil, and elder siblings Mary, Joseph, Sr. Rita, and Kuruvilla. He is survived by many nephews, nieces, grand-nephews and grand-nieces.
Born on April 14, 1927, he had a long, wonderful life in which he generously helped and sponsored others. He was raised in Kottayam, Kerala, India as a Catholic. After receiving bachelor’s and master’s degrees in Poona, India, he migrated to the United States in 1961 and earned an MBA from the University of Detroit and a Ph.D. in statistics from Wayne State University. He initially worked for Blue Cross/Blue Shield in Detroit and went on to become the Director of Research at the American Hospitals Association in Chicago; he later held the same position at Baxter Laboratories before his retirement in 1993. He wrote several scholarly books and articles related to health care in the United States.
Although he never married, he was instrumental in bringing several members of his extended family from India to the United States who all became highly successful. His sense of humor, entertaining storytelling, and generous spirit will be greatly missed.
